Covid Creativity – Big Local’s Virtual Exhibition
Lockdown has forced us all to slow down. While for many it has narrowed and limited our exterior worlds, it has also allowed us the time to look inwards and expand our imaginations. For teenagers and young adults this time has felt particularly long, restrictive and frustrating, without the ability to interact, play and experiment with friends and peers that this stage in life should afford. For many, art and creativity has been the outlet for our minds’ wanderings and a way of calming our anxieties in the process. The young artists who joined this programme have been thus inspired and have chosen their works created during this time for a unique virtual exhibition.
Throughout this journey they have been instrumental in making key decisions about how their work is displayed with wonderful results. Each artist’s work is incredibly diverse and often powerful, many clearly touch on important life questions that we have all been reflecting on during these uncertain times; identity, isolation, escapism to name a few. The programme has clearly encouraged their confidence and ability to experiment, and it is evident from the scope and strength of this exhibition that they have all found their own visual languages. As art has excited them, perhaps helped sustain them during this time, this exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to share their work with us, allowing a window into their imaginative worlds and thoughts.
We dedicate this exhibition to all young artists everywhere, and to those who support them.
